The beach below Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon is one of Iceland‘s most spectacular sights. Many travellers forget to make a stop there as they become to spellbound by the lagoon itself. When you visit, be sure not to miss the melting glaciers tumbling in the shoreline just right there on the other side of the road.
Mt. Kirkjufell, or Steeple Mountain, is located on the northern shore of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. The elegant mountain makes for the most picturesque picnic views you’ll ever find, so if you plan to see this sight when driving around Iceland then be sure to bring with you a snack… and of course your camera!! If you would rather visit Mount Kirkjufell by taking a day tour from Reykjavik that ‘s of course possible as well.
Skogafoss Waterfall is one of Iceland‘s most visited and photographed waterfalls. But that’s not the only reason you might find it familiar, as it has also been used as a backdrop in a few Hollywood productions such as Thor; The Dark World and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
The Icelandic Sheep is one of the most interesting animals you’ll find during a visit to Iceland. They are social beings and very curious, but be careful if see a flock of these when driving, as they tend to run out on the road right when you least expect it!!
I feel that this photo by Daniel Bosma just says so much about the Westfjords. This glorious peninsula is found on the north western corner of Iceland and when looking at it on a map you’ll see that it’s almost set adrift from the rest of the country. The area is remote, making it the perfect place for an off the beaten path moment: Just you, a few small towns and nature at its wildest!
The ice caves found in Icelandic glaciers are a mesmerizing natural wonder. Each year we have travellers from all over the world visiting with the sole purpose of seeing the caves. The most important thing to keep in mind is that the season starts at the beginning of November and ends around the 20th of March, and you should always join a guided tour to see these beauties.
Although not a place per se, the dramatic shapes of the Icelandic Nature need a place in this discussion about the most interesting things to see in Iceland. The interesting patterns of the Icelandic rivers, taken from air by Andre Ermolaev, are the perfect example of why it’s a good idea to try different modes of transportation when visiting. Why not try something different during a visit: Underwater, the birds eye, or maybe the belly of the beast!
