The Wilderness Center is located right on the edge of Northern Europe&#8217;s <a href="https://www.icelandtravel.is/the-highlands/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">largest wilderness area</a>. This living history centre offers two interactive exhibitions on how people have lived in this beautiful but harsh wilderness. The Wilderness Center also offers unique accommodation in historical buildings and serves meals using locally sourced ingredients. The Wilderness Center is also a unique gateway for hiking into the highlands.
The area around the Wilderness Center includes abandoned farm buildings that show the hardship and the beauty of this spectacular frontier. As soon as you park your vehicle and walk over the old wooden bridge at the Wilderness Center, you will step into an adventure into the past. The design of every detail at the premises will make you feel as if you are taking part in this adventure. The buildings, interior decorations, food, activities and hosts all play a vital role in this experience. The accommodation is in delightfully renovated and preserved old buildings.  You may feel as though you are “sleeping in a living history museum.” Recently an adjacent hotel that has rooms with private bathroom facilities but still evokes the historical character of the original buildings.
The Center also includes a rustic and cosy Hot Spring Spa with a stone-lined natural hot tub.
<h2>A journey to 15 waterfalls</h2>
Your hosts at the Wilderness Center make all their food in the old kitchen in front of guests, and the emphasis is on local ingredients – just like an Icelandic grandma’s cooking. Your hosts also operate a horse rental service and love sharing their passion for the Icelandic horse with guests. Whether riding or hiking, guests follow the glacial river Jökulsá in Fljótsdalur valley which boasts 15 magnificent waterfalls. No other river in Iceland has as many waterfalls. At one spot you&#8217;ll get the chance to winch yourself across the Jökulsá river by a traditional cable-way and explore an abandoned farmhouse on the other side.
No matter the activtiy, all the tours include a touch of storytelling in the tradition of the Icelandic Sagas!
